Skyler's Thoughts #7: The fire of passions
Dealing with the ebb and flow of life and recreation
Hey there reader, been a while eh?
I haven’t posted a newsletter in more than the “promised” approximate 2 weeks I have quoted in all my previous editions. I’ve been working hard at my new job and I’ve not had much spare time for passions nor have I made much time for my various passions.
I thought I would take this opportunity where I’ve been slacking so to speak and flip it around to turn it into a teachable moment both for you the readers and me introspectively.
On the side besides coding:
I have this wonderful newsletter as an outlet for my thoughts and learnings
I run a business with a friend for DJ & MC services for weddings/events etc.
I like to DJ in my bedroom as well
I also teach weekly indoor biking/spin classes which combines music, DJing, and fitness into a neat ball
I obviously have my own life, fiancée, dogs, friends and relationships to foster
That’s a lot of passions to maintain huh?
Inevitably when you’ve got too much on your plate, some passions have to be pushed aside for more necessary tasks. This includes caring for your dependents (in my case: two adorable but demanding puppers), working at your job that pays the bills, and previous commitments you’ve made that are coming to term.
So that’s the situation that I find myself in at this moment. I’m working very hard in my day job and trying to take care of my home while I shop for a new one too. I’ve also got my second and third jobs that ebb and flow just as life does. So you can see that my time for passions has been spent more on the points further down the bulleted list than at the top which you can read as: I haven’t been spending much time drafting and shipping newsletters.
But…
That’s completely fine! It’s the natural ebb and flow of life where you can’t control every variable nor decide when to feel passionate about your passions. I will come back to my passions over time and continue to change how I split my time among them. I’ll also continue to ride the learning curve at my new job as I grow more comfortable there and less like an imposter (see previous newsletter)
So don’t be too hard on yourself if you let some of your passions fall by the wayside while other obligations take precedence.
Firstly: Don’t let yourself down. Don’t do anything you would not be proud of.
Secondly: Don’t let others down. If you make a commitment to someone and have to forego a passion in order to keep that commitment, I say that’s usually the right move.
So go out and live and take the ebbs with the flows without being too hard on yourself that you aren’t dedicating enough time to your passion, especially if you have more than one. When you get less busy and obligations settle down, you can make more time for your passions and find a good balance.
Actionable Tip
My friend Osvaldo is passionate about product design and art and he’s a wonderful creative who is on his journey being a content creator and exploring his passions. He shared with me an amazing tip for finding time for your passions
Schedule events in your calendar to work on your passions, you can’t just do it “when you have time”. If you dedicate time for your passions you will make better progress.

I used to say I’ll release a new edition every 2 or so weeks but clearly that doesn’t hold true. Expect to hear from me somewhat regularly but not daily or weekly, how does that sound?
